Gold or Silver Jewellery? What You Should Wear

One of the most frequent questions we get asked by customers is 'What suit's me best, silver or gold?'. The perfect choice will depend on some different factors which we'll delve into in this article. To choose between gold and silver jewellery, you should consider:

1. Trends for 2024

Gold has been very popular over the last couple of years and we don't see this trend slowing down any time soon. With its warm and rich tones, gold can create beautiful statement pieces and can help to form a timeless and classic look. Looking forward towards new trends for 2024, silver is definitely making a comeback and will be a popular choice this year. Silver is a versatile colour and costs less than gold. Silver jewellery items can create an understated look with a sleek and modern aesthetic.

2. What colour suits your skin

Thinking about your skin tone can help when picking silver or gold jewellery. Warm skin tones work well with gold because the warmness of your skin compliments the yellow tones in the gold while cooler skin tones can look great with silver jewellery. Rose gold jewellery or jewellery with copper tones are versatile and can look great with all different skin tones. There aren't any strict rules, so have fun playing around and figure out what works for you.

If you're not sure of you skin tone, look at the inside of your wrist; with cool skin tones your veins will appear blue or purple in colour. Warmer skin tones usually have a more green tone to the veins. If you can't really tell from the colour of your veins, it's likely you've got a neutral skin tone  which works well with all different jewellery types.

3. What other items you want to style your jewellery with

Jewellery can be used to complete an outfit by adding a final flourish of sparkle or shine. It can complement and enhance other items that you're planning to wear, so always think about your outfit as a whole. We've got a wide range of Ethical Handmade Jewellery to browse and get some inspiration!

The colour and shape of all of your garments, shoes and accessories will either work harmoniously together or will clash, so it's important to consider how your different elements gel to make sure you're creating a coherent look. If you're planning to wear a simple warm toned dress, gold statement jewellery could work best. While a pair of simple silver studs could work well with a bold outfit with bright colours.

4. What makeup you're planning to choose

Makeup is another important consideration when choosing jewellery because the colours can help to influence the type of jewellery you pick. For example, if you're wearing bold, dramatic black or silver eye makeup, you may want to pair this with understated silver jewellery like a dainty necklace to avoid overwhelming your overall look. But if you're wearing a bold red lip colour, you may want to pair this with a statement gold bracelet as the warm toned lipstick will work well with the pop of gold.

If you're unsure of what makeup to go with, try matching the metal of your jewellery with the tones of your makeup. If you prefer warmer-toned makeup palette opt for gold jewellery, and if you prefer cool-toned makeup, choosing silver jewellery will ensure a coherent look.

5. What you prefer

Ultimately, the choice between gold and silver jewellery comes down to personal preference and there are no wrong answers! Some people have a clear favourite without having to weigh up the pros and cons and they stick to their choice happily for years.

If you instinctively prefer the warmth and richness of gold, that's the metal for you. Or you may love the understated elegance of silver. You should choose the metal that makes you feel the most comfortable and confident. If one stands out as a clear winner, go with your instinct.
